Is Your Thyroid Trying to Tell You Something? Signs, Support & Thyroid Health in London, Ontario

Fatigue, weight changes, and mood swings are often dismissed as stress, but your thyroid may be the missing piece of the puzzle.

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck, but its influence on your health is anything but small. It regulates your metabolism, body temperature, energy levels, mood, hair growth, and even your heart rate. When it's not working optimally, the effects ripple through nearly every system in your body. At Willow Naturopathic & IV Clinic in London, Ontario, we see this often: patients whose thyroid symptoms were dismissed as stress.

The challenge? Thyroid dysfunction is frequently overlooked or only diagnosed when TSH is very high even though there are other tests that could show up sooner. If you've been told your labs are "normal" but you still don't feel like yourself, you're not alone, and there may be more to the story.

Thyroid symptoms like fatigue and neck discomfort are often dismissed as stress.

Two sides of thyroid dysfunction

The thyroid can swing in either direction, underactive or overactive, and both present very differently.

Hypothyroidism (underactive): fatigue & brain fog, unexplained weight gain, cold hands & feet, hair thinning or loss, depression or low mood, constipation, dry skin & brittle nails, slow heart rate.

Hyperthyroidism (overactive): anxiety & irritability, unexplained weight loss, heart palpitations, excessive sweating, tremors or shakiness, insomnia, frequent bowel movements, muscle weakness.

The most common cause of hypothyroidism in Canada is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition where the immune system gradually attacks thyroid tissue. It's far more common in women, and often runs in families.

A standard TSH test only tells part of the story, a full thyroid panel also looks at Free T3, Free T4, and antibodies.

Why standard thyroid testing isn't always enough

Typically TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is tested to screen thyroid function. While TSH is a useful starting point, it doesn't tell the full story. At Willow, we take a more comprehensive approach, looking at a full thyroid panel which includes:

Free T3 and Free T4 - hormones produced by the thyroid

Reverse T3 - which is when the body turns off T3 from being active

Anti-TPO and Anti-TG - antibodies that can show your immune system is attacking your thyroid

Ferritin, Vitamin D, B12 - if these nutrients are deficient the symptoms can be similar to hypothyroidism. Optimizing Vitamin D also supports thyroid function and regulating the immune system if antibodies are being produced

Cortisol and adrenal markers - stress profoundly affects thyroid function

Many patients come to us with TSH in the "normal" range but hormones end up on the lower end or antibodies are present when we test them. This helps us guide treatment plans and gives you more knowledge on what is going on within your body.

Doctor explaining a thyroid gland model, naturopathic thyroid health support at Willow Naturopathic, London Ontario
At Willow, we take time to explain your thyroid health, what's happening in your body and why, so you leave feeling informed and empowered.

A naturopathic approach to thyroid health

At Willow, we believe the thyroid doesn't exist in isolation. We address the underlying drivers of dysfunction, not just manage the numbers on lab work.

Nutrition and gut health Thyroid hormone conversion from T4 to T3 happens largely in the gut and liver. A compromised gut microbiome, chronic inflammation, or nutrient deficiencies can impair this process significantly. We work with patients to optimize selenium, iodine, zinc, and iron levels, all essential for healthy thyroid function, and to heal any underlying gut dysbiosis.

Stress and the HPA thyroid axis Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which directly suppresses thyroid hormone production and conversion. If you're running on adrenaline and pushing through exhaustion, your thyroid is likely feeling it too. Adrenal support and nervous system regulation are often essential pieces of thyroid recovery. There are herbs that support cortisol regulation and improve thyroid function!

Desiccated thyroid and bioidentical support For patients who don't respond well to T4 therapy (levothyroxine/Synthroid), natural desiccated thyroid (NDT), which contains both T3 and T4, may be a more effective option. Our naturopathic doctors are experienced in prescribing and monitoring NDT as part of a comprehensive thyroid protocol.

Addressing autoimmunity In cases of Hashimoto's, the goal isn't just to replace hormones, it's to calm the immune system's attack on the thyroid. This may involve an anti inflammatory diet, identifying and removing triggers, supporting regulatory T cell function, and targeted supplementation.
